ABSTRACT

The goal of this study was to find out whether the use of Moina as an alternative fish feed fo Carassius auratus can be practiced and will have a cheaper value than most of the primary choice feed. It was hypothesized that there was no significant difference in the effect of Moina, Artemia and commercial dried feeds on the growth, survival, and economic cost of the veiltail goldfish. The growth was measured before and every after ten days of the study period through weight and length individually and as mean group. The economic cost was measured through the overall cost of each feed. Results of the study were subjected to descriptive statistical tests, namely, mean and standard deviation. Inferential statistical tests, namely, Sheffe Multiple Comparison Test, Turkey HSD, and One-Way Analysis of Variance, all set at 0.05 level of significance, was employed to test the hypothesi. These results showed that Moina, Artemia an commercial dried feeds were effective in increasing both the weight and the length of the veiltail goldfishes. But only Moina and Artemia were effective in preserving the total number of fishes with a high rate. Also, commercial dried feeds could not be classified as a good feed for fishes considering its low survival rate compared to Artemia and Moina. It could be confirmed that live feed is much better than any other form of preserved dried food. Artemia could be considered a good feed for fishes nutritionally and survival percentage speaking. But, due to its high price in the market, it is not recommendable to starters of the fish business. Beginners and simple hobbyists could not afford to choose this kind of feed. So, Moina is the most favorable alternative feed concerning all categories. It is economical due to its availability in any brackish water ponds, its nutritional content helped the fishes achieve a high growth level, and it is not harmful to the fishes survival.
