ABSTRACT
Due to the population boom in the last quarter of the century, it has been necessary to be able to make use of every resources available for the advantage of men. Nitrogen fixing bacteria play an important role in agriculture, acting as a fertilizer and a food supplement. This study aims to grow blue green algae Microcystis under laboratory conditions and determine the best culture media and pH tolerance for algal growth.
Samples of the Blue green algae Micricytis were obtained from SEAFDEC, Tigbauan and Iloilo. A study for the selection of the best culture media and pH tolerane ( in Walnes Conwy Nutrient Medium ) necessary for greater algal yield was made. The Sedgewick- Rafter Counting Chamber was used in counting the algae. Results showed highest yields of alga in distilled water, as compared to those cultured in tap water and Walnes Conwy Nutrient Medium. It was also observe that this certain species thrive best in pH 8.0, suggesting that its prefer alkaline condition.
No significant difference was found among the yields of the three different culture media. likewise, due to the varying conditions in the temperature., there was no significant different from the used of different pH levels.
