ABSTRACT

Considering the world conditions nowadays, it cannot be doubted that infections caused by Aspergillus niger is widespread and the impoverished majority of the society cannot afford to buy medicines. Coconut shell extract, if proven in the laboratory to exhibit antifungal activiity, is an inexpensive. alternative medicine. The study aimed to test the antifungal effect of coconut shell extract on Aspergillus niger using Poison Food Technique in Potato Dextrose Agar (PDA) medium among two other setups, namely negative control ( distilled water) and positive control (Ketoconazole) to compare their antifungal effectiveness after 5 days, the results were gathered and expressed in mean mycelial growth diameters. Results showed that Cocos nucifera shell extract has the least mean mycelial growth diameter (0.00 cm) than the Ketoconazole positive control (3.42 cm) and distilled water negative control (7.73 cm). Coconut shell extract has antifungal activity on Aspergillus niger. It displayed the least diameter of mycelial growth compared to Ketoconazole and distilled water.
