ABSTRACT
Teeth discoloration is a common problem in today’s society. There are many ways to treat tooth discoloration but most of these are expensive. The most common treatment for teeth discoloration is dental bleaching. This study aims to find a cheap but effective substitute for a bleaching agent using ingredients that can be found at home.
An Averrhoa bilimbi (Iba) fruit was collected and its juice was extracted. A bleaching paste was made with the Averrhoa bilimbi(Iba) fruit extract as the main ingredients. Three treatments were made with the following ratios: 1:0, 1:1 and 1:2 with baking soda and Averrhoa bilimbi (Iba) extract, respectively. The following properties of each treatment were evaluated: color, odor and pH. After the evaluation of each property, the paste was applied to the teeth for ten minutes. This process was repeated with one day interval for two weeks. There were 3 trials in each treatment. The salivary substitute solution was changed after each treatment.
In the ratio, 1:0 only one tooth did not reach the hue of 61, which is the lightest hue. In the ratio, 1:1 also one tooth did not reach the lightest hue which is 61. In ratio, 1:2 all of the teeth reached hue number 61.
Ratios 1:0, 1:1 and 1;2 of baking soda to bleaching paste, repectively, can prove to whiten the teeth faster.
